Top 4 Sandwich Shops in Cincinnati
A sandwich is an amazing meal in and of itself, and depending on the ingredients, it can take on various flavors. The list is endless on the combination of tastes you can enjoy between different meats, cheeses, vegetables, and condiments. Everyone loves a good sandwich, so here are Performance Kings Honda’s top four sandwich shops in Cincinnati.
J & W Sandwich Shoppe
Known for their club, Philly steak hot sandwich, and double BLT, you’re sure to find a sandwich you’ll enjoy at J & W Sandwich Shoppe. Try the Little Italy, made with capocollo, ham, salami, provolone cheese, banana peppers, lettuce, and tomato on a 16-inch sub roll. Or, how about the New Yorker with Swiss cheese, pastrami, and mustard on rye bread? J & W also offers the basics such as egg salad, roast beef, and a veggie sandwich.
For the bigger appetite, you’ll want to order one of their double deckers or subs. These are made with more meat, either double the meat of your choice or a combination such as ham and turkey. There’s also a nice selection of hot sandwiches, including the steak hoagie, gyro, and chicken Philly options. Add fries, cheese fries, or chili cheese fries to make it a meal. You’ll find J & W Sandwich Shoppe at 2008 Worth Ave. They are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
If you’re looking for a sandwich shop that could rival a New York deli, then Carl’s Deli is your place. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. At Carl’s, you can order one of their deli sandwiches or create your own. Deli sandwiches include the albacore tuna on rye, crab artichoke, and Italian turkey on baguette.
If you prefer to create your own masterpiece, Carl’s has a wide variety of meats, cheeses, and vegetables that you can mix and match on 10 different kinds of bread. The possibilities are endless! Add to it that you can top your creation with over 10 different sauces, and you may just be in sandwich heaven. Options include rotisserie turkey, rare roast beef, Great Lakes Swiss, provolone, mixed greens, Vidalia onions, spicy brown mustard, and horseradish sauce on salty rye, multigrain, or whole wheat bread. Carl’s is located at 2836 Observatory Ave.
Potbelly Sandwich Shop
The story of this sandwich shop begins in an antique store owned by Peter Hastings and his wife. As a way to better serve their customers, they started serving sandwiches in 1977, and that little sandwich adventure soon took over the shop. Potbelly Sandwich Shop is now the neighborhood spot for lunch to enjoy sandwiches and homemade desserts. As if that isn’t enough of a story to get you inside the sandwich shop, there’s also a working potbelly stove that provides Potbelly Sandwich Shop’s warmth.
Be sure to try the BLTA with applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, fresh-sliced avocado, and mayo on toasted bread. The Wreck is a fan favorite sandwich at Potbelly’s, made with oven-roasted turkey, Angus roast beef, salami, hickory-smoked ham, and completed with melted Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on multigrain bread. They also offer a PB & J, with grape jelly and creamy peanut butter served on multigrain bread. Another must-try sandwich is their Meatball with marinara smothered meatballs and melted provolone cheese on multigrain bread. For lighter appetites, they offer a Skinny Mushroom Melt, Skinny Hammie, and Skinny T-K-Y.
The sides are almost as good as the sandwiches at Potbelly, so be sure to add one to complement your meal. They have the Craft Your Own Mac & Cheese that allows you to add two premium toppings such as bacon or roasted red peppers to the three-cheese pasta dish. Potbelly’s also offers several soups, including chili, chicken pot pie, garden vegetable, and loaded baked potato. If you prefer chips with your sandwich, they have plenty to choose from, like Zapp’s Mesquite or Baked Lay’s. Don’t forget to add a Potbelly whole pickle to complete your order.
Finally, top it all off with a cookie or hand-dipped milkshake complete with a maraschino cherry and whipped cream on top. There are four locations for Potbelly’s in the Cincinnati area for your sandwich needs. You can find them at 28 Fountain Square Plaza, 2692 Madison Road, 7800 Montgomery Road, and 9727 Colerain Ave.
Home to the world’s greatest Reubens, Izzy’s has been serving up sandwiches since 1901. Specialty sandwiches include The New Yorker, made with Izzy’s famous corned beef, pastrami, and melted imported Swiss cheese on rye bread. Another sandwich you need to try is the Pastrami Delight, tasty pastrami, onion, and imported Swiss cheese topped with a mixture of sweet peppers, minced olives, special herbs, spices, and garlic on a toasted telera roll. All of Izzy’s specials are served with their delicious pickles and award-winning potato pancake.
Then, you have the Reubens. Not just one type of Reuben, but nine! Izzy’s Famous Reuben is an anything-but-basic Reuben made with their famous corned beef, melted imported Swiss cheese, and special dressing. If that’s too boring for you, then check out the Goetta Reuben. This Reuben is topped with Glier’s goetta along with the famous corned beef, melted imported Swiss cheese, and Izzy’s special dressing, but this time served on a telera roll. Another favorite is the Philly Reuben, filled with Black Angus roast beef, creamy coleslaw, and Izzy’s special dressing on a telera roll.
Izzy’s also has several signature sandwiches, such as the Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Walter sandwich. This sandwich is made with Black Angus roast beef, oven-roasted turkey breast, American cheese, lettuce, and tomato piled high on whole-wheat bread. You’ll also want to bite into the Thanksgiving (On a Roll) topped with oven-roasted turkey, cranberry orange relish, cream cheese, and lettuce on a telera roll. It won’t disappoint! You can get your sandwich fix Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 800 Elm St. in Cincinnati.
From the type of bread you start with to the meats and cheeses you pile on top, sandwiches are an excellent choice for mealtime. Add to that a bag of chips, a bowl of soup, or a milkshake for the perfect lunch break for the workday.
