Climbers of all ages can enjoy climbing at a limestone bouldering wall at the Nona France area of Blue Creek Metropark in Whitehouse, Ohio. Bouldering is a form of rock climbing performed without ropes or harnesses. Climbers move horizontally or vertically along the face of a climbing surface, giving them more options for climbing than if a rope attached them. Bouldering also allows climbers to practice specific climbing moves safely from the ground. With the correct safety gear and trained spotters, you can enjoy this dynamic form of climbing and test your physical fitness and climbing capabilities in the process.

To get to the bouldering wall, you’ll take a short walk down a gravel path from the parking lot near the Nona France sledding hill at Blue Creek Metropark. You’ll find the entrance to Blue Creek Metropark on Providence Street, close to the Whitehouse Village offices. Blue Creek Metropark is approximately 204 miles from Cincinnati, about a three-hour drive.

Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area

As the recreational area for Wayne National Forest, Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area is a picturesque spot featuring a large, 143-acre lake surrounded by more than 25 miles of hiking trails. The site takes its name from the historic Vesuvius iron furnace that previously operated in the area.

Most of the rock climbing that individuals can pursue here is along the lakeshore, approximately 50 feet from the water. Spectacular cliffs and ledges offer plenty of spots to go rock climbing, with more than a dozen established routes featuring clean, high-quality rock. Routes are at most approximately 35 to 40 feet tall, according to information from Mountain Project, and you can top rope on almost all the routes if you have enough climbing rope.

Lake Vesuvius is close to Ironton, Ohio, an approximately two-hour, 131-mile drive from Cincinnati. To get to Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area from Ironton, follow these directions:

1. Take exit 93 from Highway 52 and travel north on Ohio State Route 93.
2. After approximately 5.8 miles, look for a sign for the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area. Make a right turn within 100 yards of the sign onto Paddle Creek Road.
3. Paddle Creek Road will take you directly into the park. You can access most of the main climbing routes by taking the road that forks to the right. Parking is available in the lot near the dam spillway.

Logtown Quarries

Located near Lisbon, the Logtown Quarries is one of the most memorable places to go rock climbing in Ohio. Approximately 70 rock-climbing routes exist at this location, offering climbers of all abilities plenty of adventures.

Climbers at Logtown can find the Middle Cliffs and the trail to the Big Cliffs. Although previously unbolted, the Middle Cliffs at Logtown now feature several bolted routes and some traditional lines.

According to the Ohio Climbers Coalition, the Big Cliffs at the Logtown Quarries are on private property, and several bolted and traditional routes combine here. “Most bolts are new since 2018; as always use your judgment when considering a route,” the coalition’s website states. “Most of the bolted lines climb between the drill marks from the old sandstone quarry.”

Experts recommend climbing on the towering lower main section of the cliff, since only a few horizontal bedding planes exist, forming ledges. Top roping isn’t recommended at the site due to the deteriorating conditions at the top portion of the cliff.

Location: You can access the Logtown Quarries from the Lisbon-Roger exit off Ohio State Route 11 near Lisbon, approximately a four-hour, 267-mile drive from Cincinnati. Take Ohio State Route 154 west to U.S. Route 30 and travel through Lisbon. Before reaching the bridge at the edge of the town, turn right to go north on Logtown Road. Travel a short distance until you drive over the paved biking and walking path. Look for the parking lot past the bike path on your left.
